The first international Mandela day whereby people where asked to dedicate 67 minutes to community work was also celebrated in Mitchell’s Plain. The youth department from the Uniting Reformed Church in Westridge decided to spend their 67 minutes giving the Tafelsig United Aids Project (T.A.U.P) building a facelift. T.U.A.P a non-government organisation working to combat the spread of HIV/Aids in Mitchell’s Plain offers HIV/Aids awareness campaigns, educational projects, home base care and provide 3500 malnourished and HIV/Aids infected & affected people with daily meals. ![]() Determined to paint both the kitchen facilities and outside building in less than 67 minutes, called on local business and the community to support them with this project, Campwell Hardware Town Centre and Nappies Paint & Waterproofing donated much needed paint and paint equipment. The 67 minutes project ended up to be a 3hours one but the highlight for the youth was when Prof. Wilmot James shadow Minister of Higher Education and Training in the National Government also came to lend a hand with the painting of the building. The project attracted wide interest and a group of community members handed out meals to various people nearby the building. The youth department has called on Mandela Day to be a annual event and has challenges youth groups to also offer their support to NGO’s. Foreign students visit Mitchell’s Plain.
